Railroad lines were digitized using the best available digital orthophotos in 2003. For the Rapid City area, local orthophotos with a pixel size of 1/2 and 1 foot were used. For the County area, USGS DOQQs with a pixel size of 1 meter were used. All lines were individually digitized and attributed, including main lines, sidings, and spurs. Track that is not connected to a main line or spur or is apparently abandoned was not digitized. In 2016 the feature class was updated using newer orthophotos with better resolution.
